This sequence of events parallels the life of Faulkner's literary character, Colonel John Sartoris. He too is replaced by his men in the annual election of officers with his contemporary Thomas Sutpen. Col. Sartoris then returned to Mississippi and formed a guerilla unit to harass the Northern Armies. Many of Faulkner's great grandfather's actions have been incorporated into the fictional life of Colonel Sartoris.
