The BELFAST NEWSLETTER INDEX

SUBJECT HEADING GUIDE

During the indexing process each news item and advertisement was given one or more subject headings to enable the user to quickly identify materials relating to a particular broad subject area. The various subject headings are listed below along with short definitions of each. Our object was to make the meanings of the headings as self-evident as possible. Thus, all advertisements for medicines or physicians may be found under the heading admed.; all death notices may be found under d.; and so on.

Users will find that the general and advertisement headings tend to overlap to some extent and that it is advisable to check both listings when searching for materials. For example, a person interested in medicine during this period should refer to both med. and admed.

Note: it is NOT necessary to input the period (.) when executing a search involving subject headings.
