The Atchafalaya Basin begins in Central Louisiana and stretches south to the Gulf of Mexico.  It includes the Lower Atchafalaya River, Wax Lake, and the Atchafalaya Bay.

The Basin covers 20 miles in width and 150 miles in length, making it the nations largest swampland.  Despite its vast area, it is very susceptible to flooding.  The process of delta switching is used as an attempt to control its water levels.  The Atchafalaya has served periodically as the main channel of the Mississippi River.
