TIPS ON TAKING TESTS
EXTREME MODIFIERS AND QUALIFYING WORDS

Extreme Modifiers* Qualifying Words **
all some frequently
every many more, less
always often good, bad
invariably usually	better, worse
only most best, worst
none few sometimes
never seldom
absolutely almost

* Extreme modifiers allow for no exceptions. If you see one of these words in a statement or on a true-false test, the statement is probably false unless it is a definition or a mathematic or scientific principle. Why? Because there are few things in this world that are absolutely true all of the time.

** Qualifying words do allow for exceptions. If you see one of these words in a statement on a true-false test, the statement may be true.

When taking a true-false test, read the question very carefully. If you do not know the answer and have to guess, look for extreme modifiers or qualifying words that may help you select the right answer.

THe next time you take a true-false test in one of your classes, examine the questions you missed. Try to identify extreme modifiers or qualifying words that could have helped you choose the right answer if you had been looking for them.
