Motor Speech Disorders is a graduate level course
involving the study of speech disorders resulting from central and/or peripheral
nervous system damage. The focus of the course is on the acquired disorders
of dysarthria and apraxia of speech. Students should have a thorough
understanding of the neurological substrates of speech prior to enrolling
in this course (CODI 419 or the equivilent). Students completing the
course will be able to identify the pathologic neuromuscular conditions associated
with the various motor speech disorders as well as the associated speech symptoms
and design a treatment program that addresses the specific deficits of an
individual patient or patient group.
This course is considered an elective course for students in the Master's program and is recommended for students with a primary interest in working with adult populations. There is some overlap in basic information with the course in developmental motor speech disorders but the focus of this course is on working with patients with acquired rather than developmental speech disorders.
