Group Project Assignment: Swallowing Disorders Caused by Neurologic
Lesions and Degenerative Diseases
This assignment is worth 50 pts and consists
of two parts. The first part is the oral presentation to the
class that should last approximately 10 minutes. This is worth 20 points.
You should describe the lesion or disease, giving some background about
the disorder (incidence, underlying pathology, prognosis for recovery, etc.)
Next you should discuss the specific types of swallowing problems (symptoms)
that typically occur in this population. The second part of the assignment
is a written report (30 points) which should cover the above topics in more
detail than your oral presentation and, in addition, address treatment/management
strategies that are appropriate for a patient with the swallowing symptoms
you described. You should describe/discuss each treatment strategy
in detail - I'm not just looking for a list at this point. You should
use the information in Chapters 9 and 10 of your text to as a starting point
for your research, but should consult at least 2 other sources for additional
material. Written reports should be typed and be approximately 5 pages.
The written paper is due April 2, 2003.
