Medcial Speech Pathology is a graduate
level course designed to introduce students to the medical setting as
a prospective work setting. Specific topics covered
within the course include assessment and treatment of dysphagia, management
of patients who have undergone a partial or total laryngectomy, and management
of the communication and swallowing problems of tracheostomized and ventilator-dependent
adults/children. Medical record keeping and and medical terminology
are also discussed. Through this course, students also have the opportunity
to "shadow" experienced clinicians at various medical settings within the
Acadiana region in order to gain perspective into the demands and rewards
of these job settings. This course is required of students requesting
an off-campus placement in a hospital or rehab setting.
This course is normally taught each
Spring semester and is required of students requesting an off-campus placement
in a hospital or rehab setting. Students will typically take this class during
their first year in the program. Prerequisties include a course in
neuroanatomy/neurophysiology of the speech mechanism (CODI 519 or equivalent).
The objectives for the course are not
limited to but do include the following student outcomes. At the end of the
learning experience, the student should be able to:

diagnosis, progress and discharge plan.
- discuss normal swallowing function and
major disorders of deglutition.
- select appropriate patients for evaluation
of swallowing.

examinations of dysphagia (videofluoroscopy, FEES. ultrasound imaging, manometry)
- choose appropriate management strategies
for dysphagis patients
- discuss modificatins of diagnositc/management
procedures for specialized paopulations i.e. infants/children, trach patients,
etc.
- discuss the anatomy and physiology of
the patient post-laryngectomy
- discuss the various communication options
for patients with total laryngectomy
- select appropriate candidates for tracheoesophageal
fistulization/puncture (TEP) and tracheostoma valve
- discuss important considerations in the
fitting and care of the TE prosthesis and/or tracheostoma valve
- understand the use, function and care
of tracheotomy tubes and tracheostomy speaking valves
