Week 1

Wednesday, January 13. Course introduction and syllabus discussion. Information regarding UCS account. The course home page URL is <http://www.ucs.ull.edu/~jwf7377/index.html>. Chapter One: An Introduction to Technical Writing of the online manual and the Personal Web Site project page. Look at the Sample Home Page and the Protocols for Creating and Setting up a Basic Home Page.When you have opened your UCS account, e-mail me using the e-mail link found on the English 365 home page. In this e-mail, give me a little of your computing background and expertise (or lack thereof). If you e-mail me from class, you will have to do so by using the Web Mail Log In.

Week 2

Monday, January 18. Martin Luther King Day

Wednesday, January 20. You must have your UCS account and e-mail set up by today. Chapter Two: Purpose and Audience and Chapter Three: Planning of the online manual. Workshop: Basic Home Page.

Week 3

Monday, January 25. Read Chapter Four: Stylistic Desiderata of the manual. Workshop: The Basics of Technical Writing and Other Works in Progress (OWIP).

Wednesday, January 27. Basic Home Page Checkpoint #1 (ungraded).Your home page should be up on the UCS server. If time permits, I will be reviewing each student's Web site in class; if it does not, I will look at them from home. Consider it a work in progress that you can continue to tweak during the semester. Read Chapter Five: Document Design and Layout and Chapter Six: Ethical Responsibilities of the manual.

Week 4

Monday, February 1. Read Chapter Seven: Letter of Application and Résumé of the manual and the Résumé and Letter of Application project page. Also, read Chapter Eight: Describing a Process of the manual and the Instructions project page. Workshop: Writing a Letter of Application and Résumé and OWIP.

Wednesday, February 3. Read and print both Appendix I: The Manuscript (ms) & Camera-Ready (c-r) Formats of the manual and the English 365: Document Submission Requirements. Workshop: Writing Instructions and OWIP.

Week 5

Monday, February 8. Checkpoint for Letter of Application and Résumé. You must turn in hard copy of both pages and a copy of the position advertisement at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Writing Instructions and OWIP.

Wednesday, February 10. Read Chapter Nine: Proposals and Chapter Ten: Reports of the manual and the Proposal project page. Workshop: Writing Memos, E-mail, and Writing Proposals and OWIP.

Week 6 Mardi Gras
Week 7

Monday, February 22. Checkpoint for Instructions. You must turn in hard copy of your Instructions at the beginning of the class. Also, after you have made appropriate changes (if necessary), be sure to ftp a copy of your camera-ready instructions to your public_html file and put a link to that file on your home page so anyone can download the file. Read the Process Analysis project page. Workshop: Writing a Process Analysis and OWIP.

Wednesday, February 24. Basic Home Page #2 (background, welcome message, graphic, links to 365 Home Page and to your e-mail: checkpoint, 15 points). Workshop: Writing a Process Analysis and OWIP.

Week 8

Monday, March 1. Checkpoint for Proposal memo. This checkpoint carries no credit points. You must turn in hard copy of your memo at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Discussion of proposal memos; Writing Process Analyses, Writing Reports, and OWIP.

Wednesday, March 3.Read Table and Chart project page. Workshop: Writing Reports, Table and Chart project, and OWIP.

Week 9

Monday, March 8. Checkpoint for Process Analysis. Workshop: Table and Chart and OWIP.

Wednesday, March 10. Read Chapter 12: Online Publication and Chapter 14: Oral and Visual Presentations of the manual and the PowerPoint Presentation project page. Workshop: PowerPoint and OWIP.

Week 10

Monday, March 15. Checkpoint for Table and Chart. You must turn in hard copy of the Table and Chart at the beginning of the class. Read the Proposal Progress Report project page. Workshop: Progress Report and OWIP.

Wednesday, March 17. Read Chapter Thirteen: Collaborative Writing of the manual and the Brochure project page. Read Chapter Eleven: Critical Interpretations and Assessments and the Critical Report project page. Workshop: Collaborative Writing. Division of the class into collaborative groups. Workshop: Brochures and critical interpretations and assessments.

Week 11

Monday, March 22. Checkpoint for Proposal. You must provide hard copy of the Proposal at the beginning of the class. Begin PowerPoint Presentations. Checkpoint for PowerPoint Presentations. Mandatory attendance.

Wednesday, March 24. Checkpoint for PowerPoint Presentations. Mandatory attendance.

Week 12

Monday, March 29. Checkpoint for Proposal Progress Report. You must provide hard copy of the Proposal Progress Report at the beginning of class. Division of the class into collaborative groups.

Wednesday, March 31. Basic Home Page #3 (15 points): Links to "About Me," résumé, and instructions. Workshop: Collaborative Writing.

Week 13 Easter/Spring Break
Week 14

Monday, April 12. No class, but continue working on your collaborative projects.

Wednesday, April 14. Checkpoint for Brochure. You must provide hard copy of the Brochure (one for each group) at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Collaborative projects and OWIP

Week 15

Monday, April 19. Checkpoint for Critical Report due. You must provide hard copy of the Report (one for each group) at the beginning of the class. Workshop: Workshop: OWIP.

Wednesday, April 21. Read the section of the Policy Sheet dealing with the class portfolio. Workshop: Course Portfolio.

Week 16

Monday, April 26. Workshop: Course Portfolio and OWIP.

Wednesday, 28. Last day of class. Portfolios, final exams, and graded checkpoint due. Have your portfolio ready to turn in at the beginning of the hour.

Note

The Final Examination for English 365-7 is scheduled for Thursday, May 6, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. At any time during those hours, you may retrieve your portfolio and final examination and get your final course grade at my office (HLG 230).
