Maraca!

In July 1999, a rare green violet-ear hummingbird, probably originating in Mexico, appeared in Lafayette, Louisiana.

It was documented at the home of Joe and Gail Andriano as the first of this beautiful species to appear in Louisiana. Gail has a knack for attracting odd birds, including of course her husband.

Gail decided to name the bird "Maraca" because when he flew and flitted around the feeder he sounded like a maraca rattling with only a couple of beans in the gourd . . . .

We hoped for his return in July 2000. No luck!
