CURRENT RESEARCH:

Dr. Lynch’s research focus has always been in the field of psychoneuroendocrinology.  Early in her career as a scientist, she has explored various hormonal mechanisms in a hope to understand how hormones influence brain mechanisms involved in behavior.  While her work in the past has focused on sex steroids, such as estrogens, progestins, and androgens, her most recent work explores the effects stress hormones and stress factors on behavior.  In collaboration with Dr. Fontenot at the NIRC, Dr. Lynch has been studying laboratory housing factors as potential stressors determining abnormal self-injurious and stereotypic behaviors in rhesus monkeys.  Newly proposed collaborations with Dr. Fontenot and 2 Cognitive Science Ph.D. candidates, Ms. Sarah Dubose and Ms. Amber Wright, will further examine the role of social stressors and related self-injurious behaviors in determining problems in socialization and deficits in learning and memory.    In another project, Dr. Lynch and Ms. Arlene Billock, another Cognitive Science Ph.D. candidate, are exploring the effects of stress on learning and memory in the Bob white quail.  Together, these projects begin to define the important effects of stress on cognitive abilities that lend to the adaptability of many mammalian species.
