PSYCHOLOGY 360

Fall, 1998: Test #1

Part I.   Please answer all of the questions in this section. Question 1 is worth 30 points; Questions 2 and 3 are worth 25 points each. (Distribute your time accordingly!) Note that you should CITE EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE (including names of experimenters), where possible, to support your answers. Note too that I give partial credit, so NEVER LEAVE A QUESTION BLANK!

1. We have looked at many studies in which the relevant data are the mistakes people make. People sometimes claim to see or hear things that were not present; people sometimes combine parts of objects incorrectly; and people sometimes fail to report objects that were there. For each of these, briefly mention one or two studies (two, where possible) relevant to it, and what those studies tell us about whether a given theory is correct or incorrect. (And don't limit your studies to just the unit on attention, or just the unit on pattern recognition.)

2. Here is a very brief description of an experiment by Nissen & Bullemer: They took two groups of people and gave them a lot of practice on a consistent mapping task. One group had a difficult second task to do at the exact same time (we'll call them the dual-task group, and the other group the single-task group). Only the single-task group developed automaticity.

Discuss how this result fits in with the major theories of automaticity we've looked at (Schneider & Shiffrin's theory; Logan's Race model; Hasher & Zacks's view). And do include other studies and findings relevant to these theories!

3. Briefly discuss findings involving each of the following and tell me why it is important or relevant:

            a) stimulus suffix effect

            b) Phillips' matching task

            c) Lockhead & Crist's work with letter identification

            d) thought suppression

Part II.   Pick five of the following to comment on (each is worth 4 points):

            1. Partial report cue

            2. Fechner

            3. Wundt

            4. Interactive activation model

            5. Stroop task

            6. Segal & Fusella

BONUS (for up to three points): Do the remaining item (but let me know which item you want to count as your bonus!!!)
