This project started in September 2003 as pilot
project and was funded by the National
Science Foundation from 2003-2005 under grant DMS-0311969. The purpose
of it is to train undergraduate students in the interdisciplinary area of
mathematical biology through curriculum development and new courses
together with long term research experiences for these students. In
September of 2005 a full scaled version of this project was funded by National
Science Foundation for five additional years under grant number DUE-0531915.
Briefly,
the new project involves developing two new courses and two new seminars in
the area of mathematical biology and research experiences for undergraduate
biology and mathematics majors in animal and plant population dynamics.
Each student will participate for one year in the following research
projects:
1)
Using mark and
recapture technique to obtain population estimates in four ponds located at
the USGS National Wetlands Research Center and developing a structured population model which
describes the dynamics of the frog population in these ponds.
2)
Understanding the
dynamics of native and invasive Louisiana Iris populations by conducting
field studies and using mathematical modeling techniques.
