UL Lafayette Bulletin course description (2003-05). Supervised participation in nursery school environment. Applications of program design, classroom management, and parent involvement. Fa. Sp. Prereq: HUMR 339, 417. Prereq or Coreq: HUMR 429. Restr: Seniors in Child and Family Studies or Family Consumer Sciences majors only.
Course Objectives:
(1) To apply developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood
to the nursery school setting.
(2) To develop and implement preschool classroom activities under
supervision.
(3) To practice self-evaluation techniques and develop strategies
for change in self as a preschool teacher.
(4) To develop an activity resource for use with children ages 3-5.
Course Assignments:
(1) Prepare written goals for the semester. Include specific
experiences you would like to have. Meet with supervising teacher and negotiate
activities and approval of goals. Have both parties sign goals and
plan for the semester. At the end of the semester this form will be
used in partial evaluation of the experience. Quality as well as quantity
of experience will also assist in evaluation.
(2) Schedule and meet with UL Lafayette instructor during the
month of September to evaluate goals and progress. During the month of November
the instructor will visit at your site. You will assist in scheduling
this visit and will plan to carry out a self-planned activity during the
visit. Student will schedule a final conference with instructor by December
10.
(3) Keep a daily journal of your practicum experiences.
(4) Be an active participant in the preschool classroom for 6 hours
per week (2 mornings).
(5) Keep a daily sign-in sheet with all dates and times of participation.
This will be initialed by the supervising teacher on a daily basis.
(6) Plan and prepare activities for preschool children as assigned by
the supervising teacher. These will be in the areas of literature; language
arts; large motor; music; creative arts; science; and math. A minimum
of 5 activities in each area will be planned and put on Planning cards (as
per HUMR 429 cards). At least 1 activity from each area must actually
be conducted. An evaluation of the activity will be added to these
planning cards after student conducts the activity.
(7) At the end of the semester, submit a written statement (max 2 pages typed) of your philosophy of preschool education as it has been influenced by your practicum experience. Due December 10.
